Things I Guarantee and things I don’t.

Things that I guarantee to members of a team coached by me. You will be loved  You will be heard You will be respected  You will be valued  You will be held accountable  You will learn how to handle adversity You will learn valuable life lessons in respect, honesty, and leadership. You will learn what it means to be a part of something bigger than yourself Things that I don’t guarantee  That you will play the position you want That you will start How much playing time you will get  That you will have the same role at the end of the season that you had when you started the season

Why I Can’t Understand Wanting to Be Normal

Websters dictionary defines Normal as conforming to a type, standard, or regular pattern. If you worry about others perception of you, then you will never grow as a person.  Too often we define what’s acceptable of ourselves based on what others are doing.    Have you ever been held accountable for something you did and immediately responded with “but this person did it”?    You have goals and dreams things you would give anything to achieve, but no other person in the world shares exactly the same dream. They shape their behavior and day to day actions based on their own goals and dreams.    When you conform to what’s thought to be “Normal” you limit yourself to achieving average results. I don’t know about you but I don’t want to settle for average, I want extraordinary.    So I’m different. everyday I make decisions that others don’t understand.    So I make mistakes, but they’re my mistakes. I no longer make the mistakes ...

Control the narrative

There’s a book called “extreme ownership”.    In chapter 3, they discuss a moment in the war in Iraq, where higher leadership issued an order that most seals didn’t understand.    They separated navy seals into teams that included Iraqi soldiers. These Iraqi soldiers were rarely in proper physical condition lacked problem solving skills and had next to no training what so ever. A military mission requiring navy seals is not an easy task by any means and now they were going to need to train Iraqi soldiers in the field as well. They couldn’t see the purpose, they were    livid that they were being put in harms way to train Iraqi soldiers.    However the leadership team    understood what they didn’t. there weren’t going to be any winners in this war, atleast not in the traditional sense of the word.    These enemies didn’t care about winning a war they only cared about causing as much death and destruction as possible.  ...

What is fair?

Ive played and coached at many different levels of athletics.     In that time I’ve said and heard the phrase “it’s not fair” more times than I can count. The interesting thing is,     “fair” seems to mean something different depending on who you ask.     I’ll give two examples.     Ex1. a Highschool coach makes a starting lineup based on who gives their team the best chance to win.     It turns out that every single player they started played club and the back ups had not.     They found this out because a parent approached them very upset and said “I didn’t realize that my son would only get to play, if I paid for them to play AAU! How is that fair?!?”.     Ex2. Similar scenario to example one, a parent goes to a coach with a concern about the starting lineup.     However, this parent has a different view.     This parent says “ so I guess my kid played AAU so they could sit on the bench, how is ...

WHO I AM

You ask me who I am, so I tell you what I believe. You say my actions don’t always match my beliefs, so I guess who I am is hard to perceive. You see there’s the me I want to be, then there’s the me that you see.  I walk a believer among sinners, but more often than not that line couldn’t be any thinner. I tell myself it’s just a victimless crime, and keep slowly sinking over time.  I look at criminals and think I’d never do something so evil, but the Bible says that all sins are equal. So to answer your question, I guess the verdicts still out, but when I stand before GOD there wont be a doubt. You see my nature is wicked and my sins are obscene,    yet Jesus gave his life so my heart could be clean. I gave him my heart to use as he sees fit, all of me will be changed, every last bit. Since I can’t answer your question I’ll defer to someone who can, Jesus please show them, WHO, I, AM.

Rules vs Standards

Rules can be cheated, standards cannot. Rules give us the opportunity to find ways around them, it’s human nature.    The best example I have is when I run a drill where only the receiving team can score points.    When done correctly you get an extremely high volume of serve receive reps.    However the first thing every team figures out is this, if you miss your serve, your opponent can never score a point    Congratulations you just won a meaningless game and robbed yourself of any opportunity at growth.    Now standards are open to interpretation, which promotes self accountability.    If I tell you that to be on this team you need to push yourself at all times, accept the circumstances you’re given, and find ways to thrive despite the hand you’re dealt…. There’s really no way around that, you either gave it your best or you didn’t.    I want my players to be able to problem solve on a higher level bec...
